5 Savvy Tips For Solo Travel

This. Pic. Is. Life!!!! Sorry (not sorry) to be the one to admit it. In my other life, I'm a mermaid, but today I'm a blogger and on the topic of discussion is traveling solo. Some find it hard to believe, but you can actually have the time of your life....by yourself.

2016 was a great year for me. I know you we had some bumps in the road, politically, societally, and culturally but personally 2016 provided some great moments. I started the year with a goal to travel every other month. And I was committed to my goal.

Circumstances turned what was planned to be a girlfriends trip to the beautiful island of Jamaica into a solo trip. Although that wasn't the original plan, the new plan completely changed the game for me and sent my confidence through the roof after I accomplished my first trip out of the country solo. Check out my top 5 list of things to consider when traveling Team SOLO:

1. Although you traveled solo, you are never alone.

Yes, you'll board your flight solo and your room is booked for one, but realize no matter where you are, you are never alone. Think about it. There are over a billion people on planet Earth, don't even trip!

2. Don’t be afraid to ask people to take your photo.

Now that cellphones have evolved to a modern day necessity, taking photos is a part of our everyday lives. So much so that it's not even awkward to ask someone to take a picture of you. It's what we do! And nine times out of ten, the person who takes your picture wants you to return the favor, but they were afraid to ask. So break the ice and ask for those pics. The memories are worth the question. "Excuse me, would you mind taking my picture?"

3. Use caution when letting people know your traveling solo

Sparking up casual conversation on the beach is natural. Especially when the coconut rum is unlimited. Yes, we go on vacation to let our hair down, but keep that ponytail holder close when you're traveling solo. This tip is especially for the ladies. None of the fellas checking you out need to know that you're on an Island alone. When guys tried to approach me on the beach, I politely told them that my girls were back in the hotel room and I was enjoying some alone time. I let them know that the girls would be joining me soon, but I was completely fine enjoying my own company. Now if the vibe feels right and you feel comfortable letting people know you came solo then follow your intuition, it will never steer you wrong.

4. Connect with a group activity

This was a game changer for me. Prior to finalizing my trip I found a women's retreat taking place in Jamaica. Perfect! I was able to coordinate my travel, hotel accommodations, activities, dining, ect throughout the women's retreat that was planned by a group of amazing women from the island. These ladies were a Major Key to my first solo trip. Not only was I able to meet wonderful women from Jamaica and all over the Caribbean, I had an itinerary planned for me that allowed me to combine personal development with rest and relaxation.

5. Safety First

Last but certainly not least....SAFETY FIRST! All the things your parents taught you about being safe should be placed on overload and high alert when you're traveling solo. You know what your mother told you the first time you went to the mall solo (minus the don't talk to strangers part) Be aware of your surroundings. Keep your valuables (and money) close to you, concealed, or in the hotel safe. Don't go wandering off at night and by all means opt for a hotel with security!
